Six months ahead of President Vjosa Osmani’s mandate expiration, Kosovo’s parliamentary parties hold differing views on her potential second term.

  • LVV and Alternativa show positive signals and a friendly stance toward Osmani, but no official decision has been made yet. MP Arbër Rexhaj stated that support is possible, but the final decision will come after internal party discussions. Alternativa’s leader, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, confirmed that the issue has only been mentioned so far, and official discussions have not yet begun.
  • LDK remains cautious. MP Alban Zogaj emphasized that electing a president requires a majority of 81 votes, and any decision depends on political consensus.
  • PDK and AAK are firmly opposed to Osmani’s re-election. Vlora Çitaku from PDK argued that the presidency should be represented more responsibly and that Osmani has not met expectations. AAK MP Lahi Brahimaj added that Osmani has not acted as a unifying figure and has served more as a tool of acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

Political analysts also consider a second term undeserved. Albinot Maloku noted that Osmani has not fulfilled the constitutional role of the presidency, and political parties have no reason to re-elect her.

Osmani’s term ends on April 4, 2026, and under the Constitution, a new president must be elected no later than 30 days before the end of the current mandate. 80 votes are needed in the first two rounds, and 61 votes in the third round. Failure to elect a president would trigger early elections.

Currently, Kosovo’s ninth legislature is not yet constituted due to the unresolved election of the deputy speaker from the Serbian community, as ordered by the Constitutional Court on September 30.
