Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has said he is preparing to seek the position of prime minister and plans to call early parliamentary elections within the next several days.
“I will call the elections in the next few days. I think it will be the morning of September 9 or 10. September 10 is probably the final day,” Vučić said during an appearance on TV Informer, according to Danas.
Vučić said the main board of his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) would meet in Niš the following day to discuss the upcoming snap parliamentary elections and the possibility of his candidacy for prime minister.
He said that, if he receives the necessary political support, he would put forward two proposals — one immediately and another after resigning as president of Serbia.
Vučić has increasingly indicated that he intends to seek a new political role after his presidential mandate, amid growing pressure for early parliamentary elections.
Vučić proposes a smaller government
Vučić has also said that, if voters support him for prime minister, his first proposal would be to form what he described as the smallest government in Serbia’s history.
“My first proposal will be for it to be the smallest government in the history of Serbia — a prime minister and 12 ministers,” Vučić said, describing the proposal as a promise to voters.
He added that he was seriously preparing to take over as prime minister and suggested that the position would most likely represent his final political mandate.
The announcement comes as Serbia faces a politically tense period, with the ruling SNS preparing for a possible early election while opposition forces and student-led protests continue to challenge the government.
Vučić’s potential transition from president to prime minister would also allow him to remain at the center of Serbian politics after leaving the presidency, potentially reshaping the country’s political landscape ahead of the next parliamentary vote.
