Months of gathering information led to the arrest of two suspected agents of the Serbian secret service.
Bedri Shabani and Muharrem Qerimi are said to have had their superior as the Serbian BIA officer, Srdjan Rosiq.
The suspects, according to reports, also tried to distort the truth about the Reçak Massacre and meet with Ambassador William Walker.
According to security expert Agim Musliu, who was the head of close protection at the OSCE at the time, Ambassador Walker was targeted for assassination by Serbian secret services at least three times.
The most flagrant attempt, according to him, occurred on January 12, 1999, near his residence.
“Regarding the assassination attempts in 1998-99, there were at least three officially recorded incidents. The most recent was on January 12, 1999, during the Orthodox New Year. Early that morning, in front of Ambassador Walker’s residence, the airport apartments as they were called, guards reported that the police officer on duty to protect the ambassador was missing, and there were several cars and masked individuals provoking the situation.
“Normally, there was no reaction at that moment; we tried to pass as quietly and unnoticed as possible. The ambassador was evacuated to his office through a side entrance. In the office, he was informed about what happened at the entrance. At his insistence, we went to the scene. In 1998-99, there were at least three such incidents. There were special unit personnel armed with long rifles, one person had a bomb in hand and was very close to the ambassador. At that moment, the only option left was a forced evacuation and hiding in a secure room; we escaped by a fraction of a second,” he said.
Meanwhile, the prosecution has requested the detention of the suspects for espionage.
