For the 28th time in a row, the Assembly of Kosovo failed to elect its Speaker and officially constitute its new legislature. Saturday’s session (June 7) lasted only a few minutes before being postponed yet again — this time for Tuesday, June 9.
The deadlock has persisted since April 15, frustrating both the majority and opposition MPs, many of whom now describe the situation as “absurd” and “unacceptable.”
Vlora Çitaku, MP from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), criticized the ongoing institutional paralysis and called on Vetëvendosje (VV) to take steps to unblock the situation:
“This is an absurd situation. Something must be done to unblock this and finally constitute the Assembly,” Çitaku stated.
Meanwhile, Albulena Haxhiu, MP and nominee for Assembly Speaker from Vetëvendosje, reiterated that her party has the votes to form the government. She accused the opposition of deliberately sabotaging the process:
“They know we have the votes for the government. They’re holding the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo hostage,” Haxhiu said.
This marks the 20th consecutive refusal by opposition parties — PDK, LDK, AAK, and the Serb List — to propose their members for the temporary commission tasked with overseeing the secret ballot for electing the Speaker, which would allow Haxhiu’s candidacy to move forward.
VV insists Albulena Haxhiu is the right candidate for Speaker, while the opposition labels her as divisive and unacceptable.
The matter of whether the vote should be held by open or secret ballot has been submitted to the Constitutional Court, which has yet to issue a ruling.
