Zdravko Ponoš, leader of the Serbia Centre (SRCE) party, said that a joint diplomatic initiative by pro-European opposition parties aims to engage with European Union officials and clarify what he describes as a steadily deteriorating political situation in Serbia.
In an interview for the newspaper Danas, Ponoš stated that international partners need to be convinced that President Aleksandar Vučić will not lead Serbia toward full European integration, and that expectations of internal political transformation within the ruling Serbian Progressive Party are unrealistic.
He argued that it is equally important to dispel concerns among EU officials about a potential political vacuum or instability following a possible change of власти. According to Ponoš, many of his interlocutors, including senior officials from Germany’s Foreign Ministry and members of the Bundestag’s Committee on European Affairs, already understand that continued “certainty” under the current leadership does not necessarily benefit either Serbia or the European Union.
Ponoš added that the idea of stability under current conditions is, in his words, “as useful as certainty in the outcome of serious illnesses,” stressing that such a model brings no benefit to Serbian citizens or to Europe.
