The Mexican government announced on Sunday that Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” has been killed. He had long led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the country’s most powerful criminal organizations.

El Mencho was considered one of the most violent figures in organized crime in Mexico. Under his command, CJNG expanded rapidly over the past decade, establishing a reputation for open attacks on security forces and terrorizing communities across several Mexican states.

The cartel has been heavily involved in synthetic drug trafficking, including cocaine, methamphetamine, and, in recent years, fentanyl shipments to the United States.

Authorities have warned that the elimination of El Mencho represents a significant blow to the cartel.
