Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said he plans to formally resign from office on September 27, announcing that he intends to spend his time after leaving the presidency traveling across Serbia and speaking directly with citizens.
Speaking on Serbian broadcaster Pink, Vučić said he would address the public that evening and thank citizens for the support he received during what he described as the longest presidential tenure since the introduction of multiparty politics in Serbia.
“The only thing I can say is that I faithfully served Serbia, faithfully served the citizens of this country — faithfully, diligently, devotedly and with determination,” Vučić said.
He also described his plans for life after the presidency, saying he intends to visit towns and villages across the country.
Vučić said he had already purchased a camper for the trips, explaining that he would need accommodation while visiting remote areas.
“I bought a small truck, I have my own car. I also bought a camper because I won’t be able to sleep everywhere. I will go to the most remote villages and stay until late. There are still thousands of villages I haven’t visited,” Vučić said.
He added that he also plans to visit urban areas and speak with people in different settings.
“I want to visit urban places as well. I want to go to every city, stand outside a store, outside a nightclub, and talk to people,” he said, adding that he would continue speaking openly with citizens as an ordinary person.
Vučić’s announcement comes amid continuing political tensions in Serbia and speculation over the country’s future political leadership. His decision to leave the presidency would mark a major change in Serbia’s political landscape, given his central role in the country’s political life over the past decade.
