Today, a commemorative gathering was held to mark the 27th anniversary of the Krushë e Madhe massacre, a dark chapter in Kosovo’s history.

President Vjosa Osmani emphasized the horror faced by the Berisha family from Suhareka, noting that at the threshold of their own home—where life and security should have prevailed—they were met with the brutal violence of Serbia’s genocidal regime.

Osmani highlighted that 49 members of the Berisha family were brutally killed during the massacre, including 19 children under the age of 18. Many of the victims’ bodies were subsequently hidden and transported elsewhere, in a deliberate attempt to cover up the crime and erase evidence of the atrocity.

“At the threshold of their home, where life and safety should have reigned, the Berisha family faced the barbarity of Serbia’s genocidal regime. Forty-nine members of this family, including 19 children under the age of 18, were brutally massacred, and their bodies were hidden and transported elsewhere, in an attempt to conceal the crime and erase all traces of the truth,” Osmani said.

By fate, three members survived: Vjollca, her son Gramoz, and Shyhretja. These survivors became not only eyewitnesses to a horrific crime but also living voices of memory, ensuring that the story of Krushë e Madhe is never forgotten.

Osmani stressed that the story of the Berisha family is more than a tale of grief—it is a call for justice. Remembering these crimes is essential to prevent history from repeating itself. The commemoration of atrocities like the Krushë e Madhe massacre forms the foundation of truth and the pursuit of accountability.

“Let the memory of the martyrs remain eternal,” she concluded, urging that such acts of barbarity never fade from collective memory and that the demand for justice continues to guide Kosovo and the international community.
