Co-chairs of the European Green Party, Vula Tsetsi and Kieran Cuffe, have called for the organization of free and fair parliamentary elections in Serbia, emphasizing the importance of democratic standards for the country’s future.

Speaking at a press conference held at the National Assembly of Serbia, Tsetsi expressed strong support for those advocating for transparent elections, stressing that credible electoral processes are essential for Serbia’s democratic development. She also urged the international and European community to deploy election observers to monitor the process.

Tsetsi further called on the European Commission to take concrete measures regarding EU financial assistance to Serbia, suggesting that funds should be redirected toward civil society organizations. “You cannot give money to an autocrat,” she stated, adding that such actions would demonstrate the EU’s commitment to Serbia’s democratic future.

She also criticized the European People’s Party (EPP) for delays in addressing the status of the Serbian Progressive Party, which remains an associate member of the group. According to Tsetsi, European institutions should act more decisively in response to concerns about democracy in Serbia.

Cuffe echoed these concerns, stating that Serbia faces a clear strategic choice between closer alignment with Russia or Europe. He emphasized that values such as transparency, democracy, and the rule of law are essential and are best supported through European integration.

He also called on the EPP to distance itself from Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and his party, citing concerns over governance and democratic standards.

Meanwhile, Biljana Đorđević, co-chair of the Green-Left Front (ZLF), said the movement aims to internationalize the challenges facing Serbia. She called on European institutions to restore credibility among Serbian citizens and to protect them from what she described as increasing pressure and violence.

Đorđević added that the ZLF seeks to win elections in order to return power to the people, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure the rule of law in the country.
