The Court of Tirana has issued security measures for 11 individuals arrested during the Democratic Party (DP) protest held last Friday, April 17.

In a significant ruling, the court ordered “arrest in prison” for five of the protesters. For the remaining six individuals involved in the demonstration, the court applied the less restrictive measure of “compulsion to appear” (detyrim paraqitje) before judicial authorities.

A Shift in Judicial Stance

Legal observers note that this marks the first time during the recent wave of opposition-led demonstrations that the court has opted for the maximum security measure of prison detention for detainees. Previously, most protesters apprehended during similar rallies had been released under lighter supervision.

The Context of the April 17 Protest

The arrests followed a tense rally organized by the Democratic Party in the capital. While the opposition maintains that the protests are a legitimate exercise of democratic dissent, authorities moved to make arrests following incidents of alleged violence or disruption of public order during the event.

The defense for the accused has argued that the detentions are politically motivated, while the prosecution maintains that the measures are necessary based on the evidence of specific illegal acts committed during the gathering.

Summary of Court Measures:

  • Total Individuals Charged: 11
  • Arrest in Prison: 5
  • Compulsion to Appear: 6

The decision has sparked immediate reactions from opposition leaders, who view the “arrest in prison” orders as an escalation in the state’s response to political activism.
