Igor Marković, a suspect in the May 2023 violence against KFOR troops and Kosovo Police officers in northern Kosovo, appeared before the Basic Court in Prishtina on Tuesday.
Special Prosecutor Bekim Kodraliu requested 30 days of detention for Marković, as the court began a hearing to determine the security measure against him.
Marković is suspected of several criminal offenses, including “assault against an official person,” “participation in a crowd committing a criminal offense and hooliganism,” “association for unconstitutional activities,” and “endangering internationally protected persons.”
The violence in Zvečan erupted after local Serbs protested against the entry of newly elected Albanian mayors into municipal buildings in Zvečan, Leposaviq and Zubin-Potok.
The clashes left 93 KFOR personnel injured, some of them seriously. Members of the Kosovo Police and several journalists covering the events were also injured.
The May 2023 unrest marked one of the most serious escalations of tensions in northern Kosovo in recent years and prompted international condemnation, as well as calls for de-escalation and the protection of international peacekeeping personnel.
