Acting Foreign Minister and Diaspora Minister Glauk Konjufca said there is a strong possibility that Kosovo’s political parties could reach an agreement on the election of the country’s next president.
Konjufca said the next meeting between acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) leader Lumir Abdixhiku is expected to take place this week, with the parties set to discuss concrete candidates for the presidency.
According to Konjufca, Vetëvendosje is already prepared with its proposed names, although he declined to reveal who they are.
“The next meeting is expected to take place in the form of proposing concrete names for the next president, and that immediately creates a good opportunity and a new chance,” Konjufca said.
He expressed optimism that the negotiations could lead to an agreement, saying the concrete names proposed by the parties could ultimately determine who becomes Kosovo’s next president.
Konjufca said he regretted that the meeting had not taken place the previous week, but added that he understood the need for additional time given the sensitivity of the issue.
“Vetëvendosje is ready, Prime Minister Kurti is ready — we have the names, but I cannot share them with you here,” Konjufca said, adding that he expects the LDK to be ready soon as well.
He also noted that Kurti had not yet received an invitation for the next meeting with Abdixhiku.
The talks come amid a prolonged institutional deadlock in Kosovo, with the formation and functioning of state institutions closely linked to reaching an agreement on the presidency.
