Former CIA Director David Petraeus was on a train at Yahodyn railway station in Ukraine when a Russian drone struck a passenger train on Sunday.
The attack occurred shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European officials had passed through the same station.
The diplomatic train had departed earlier for Poland amid concerns over Russian attacks and had already crossed the border when the strike occurred.
Meanwhile, the train carrying Petraeus was still at the station.
Ukrainian Railways said it was “quite possible” that the drone deliberately targeted the train carrying the officials, raising concerns that the incident may have been more than an attack on railway infrastructure.
Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, who was traveling on another train near the border, shared footage showing the attack and the evacuation of passengers.
Ukraine described the strike as a dangerous escalation near the Polish border, warning that the Russian threat is moving increasingly closer to NATO and EU territory.
Russia, meanwhile, claimed that it had targeted railway infrastructure in western Ukraine used to transport military cargo supplied by European countries.
The attack comes as Russia has intensified strikes in areas close to the Polish border, further increasing concerns over the security of Ukraine and the wider European region.
