European Union Ambassador to Kosovo Dirk Schuebel met separately on Wednesday with the mayors of Kosovo’s four northern municipalities and with South Mitrovica Mayor Faton Peci, discussing local governance and cooperation between central and local institutions.
During his meeting with the four northern mayors, which was also attended by Serbian List deputy leader Igor Simić, Schuebel said the discussions focused on challenges affecting municipalities’ ability to provide services to citizens and the need for improved cooperation between central and local institutions.
“We discussed challenges affecting municipalities’ ability to deliver services to citizens, as well as the need for improved cooperation between central and local-level institutions, which would contribute to Kosovo’s European integration,” Schuebel wrote on X.
He added that the European Union would continue supporting the development of democratic local governance throughout Kosovo.
Schuebel also announced that he had held his first meeting with South Mitrovica Mayor Faton Peci, with the two discussing ways to strengthen cooperation between central and local authorities.
“Most EU-related reforms are implemented at the municipal level,” Schuebel said. “The EU is here to support local development and progress throughout the country.”
Schuebel took office as the EU’s Ambassador and Special Representative for Kosovo on September 1, 2026. His mandate includes supporting Kosovo’s European perspective, democratic governance, rule of law and minority protection, as well as contributing to the EU-facilitated Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue.
