The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has set February 9, 2025, as the date for the general elections.
She announced the news on social media, writing, “Congratulations.”
These will be the first regular parliamentary elections organized in Kosovo since the declaration of independence in 2008.
On July 31, President Osmani invited all parliamentary parties for consultations to set the election date. The leader of the ruling party, Albin Kurti of Lëvizja Vetëvendosje, did not attend this meeting.
After the meeting, Osmani stated that the parties had different proposals for the election date, but none insisted on a specific one. Some of the suggested dates included January 26 or February 2, 9, and 16.
For a long time, opposition parties had called for early elections, but earlier this year, they failed to agree on a way to proceed with elections.
In late May, an initiative by the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, to call elections by dissolving the Assembly, failed.
This option was opposed by the other two opposition parties, the Democratic League of Kosovo and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, which demanded that the government led by Albin Kurti resign or be dismissed. However, these requests were rejected by Kurti’s Lëvizja Vetëvendosje.
