The Italian Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador on Thursday to demand the immediate release of journalist Cecilia Sala, who was arrested in Tehran on December 19 while working with a valid journalist visa.

In an official statement, the ministry expressed “serious concern” over Sala’s detention and emphasized the importance of humane treatment and respect for her rights.

Concerns Over Sala’s Treatment

Italian media report that Sala is being held in isolation in a cold prison cell with a fluorescent light that remains on 24/7. Her glasses have been confiscated, and she has minimal contact with other individuals.

Riccardo Guariglia, the Secretary General of Italy’s Foreign Ministry, urged Iranian authorities to allow embassy personnel to visit Sala and provide her with essential items that have reportedly been denied.

Iran’s Stance

The Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that Sala was arrested for “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic,” without providing further details.

Her detention came three days after Iranian businessman Mohammad Abedini was arrested at Milan’s Malpensa Airport under a U.S. warrant. Abedini is accused of supplying drone parts allegedly used in a 2023 attack that killed three American soldiers in Jordan. Iran has denied involvement in the attack, with its Foreign Ministry labeling Abedini’s arrest as a breach of international law.

Broader Context

Iranian security forces have detained dozens of foreign nationals and dual citizens in recent years, often on espionage charges. Human rights organizations accuse Iran of leveraging such arrests to extract concessions from other nations, a claim Tehran denies.

Italy’s Response

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is expected to discuss Sala’s case with the ministers of foreign affairs and justice on Thursday, according to her office.

Italy’s firm stance underscores its commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad.
