Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed his fellow citizens in a direct message to former U.S. President Donald Trump, condemning his decision to impose tariffs on one of America’s main trade partners. Trudeau called Trump’s move “crazy” and pointed out that it risks escalating tensions between allies.

“It’s not my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, although you’re a very smart guy, this is a very foolish thing to do. A trade war between friends is exactly what our adversaries around the world want to see,” Trudeau said.

The Prime Minister added that Canada will challenge these U.S. tariffs through the World Trade Organization and the free trade agreement that both countries are a part of.

In response, Canada has already imposed tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods and warned that it could impose additional tariffs of up to $125 billion within 21 days.

“Our tariffs will stay in place until U.S. tariffs are removed, and not before. If these tariffs don’t stop, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to take further actions that are not tariffs, measures that will show there are no winners in a trade war,” Trudeau stated.
