Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after the federal government revoked over $2 billion in funding for the prestigious institution, according to the Turkish news agency AA.

“In the past week, the federal government took several actions after Harvard refused to comply with its illegal demands,” said Harvard President Alan Garber in a statement.

“We have now filed a lawsuit to stop the funding freeze because it is illegal and beyond the government’s authority,” he added.

The lawsuit accuses the Trump administration of “illegal” actions, claiming they violate First Amendment rights as well as federal laws and regulations.

“The government used the threat of cutting federal funds as an attempt to force Harvard to align with its preferred views and ideologies,” the lawsuit states.

Harvard is the first major academic institution to openly oppose the administration’s directives, which Trump officials presented as an effort to combat anti-Semitism following protests on campuses regarding the brutal conflict in Gaza.
