Zlatan Elek, leader of the Serbian List, has failed to secure the necessary votes to become Deputy Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly.
During today’s legislature constitutive session, Elek’s candidacy was put to a vote three times via lottery, but he did not receive any votes in favor. 54 deputies voted against, while 19 abstained. Deputies from the Serbian List did not participate in the voting process.
This marks another challenge in forming the Assembly’s leadership, as Thursday’s session—already the 60th attempt to elect parliamentary bodies—has seen deputies successfully elect the Speaker and four Deputy Speakers, yet consensus is still lacking on selecting a Deputy Speaker from the Serbian community. The delay prevents the full constitutional functioning of the legislature.
