Wayne Rooney, former Manchester United striker and England legend, has praised Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, calling him “perhaps the best signing of the season” in the Premier League.
Sunderland, newly promoted to England’s top flight this season, currently sits fourth after 11 matches. Xhaka has been a key factor in this impressive start — playing every minute, scoring once, and providing three assists, while bringing leadership and stability to the midfield.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former United star admitted he had doubts when Xhaka returned to the Premier League.
“When Xhaka came back to the Premier League, I wondered if he’d manage it — especially with a newly promoted side. But he’s probably been the signing of the season. He’s been outstanding,” Rooney said.
Xhaka previously spent several seasons at Arsenal, where he often faced criticism for his temperament. After a turbulent spell in North London, he moved to Bayer Leverkusen and helped the club win its first Bundesliga title in over a decade.
Rooney praised Xhaka’s resilience and character, particularly after his conflict with Arsenal fans.
“He showed great character to come back and play again. Then he went to Leverkusen and helped them beat Bayern Munich after ten years,” Rooney noted.
Rooney concluded by emphasizing Xhaka’s leadership role at Sunderland:
“With all the new signings this summer, he’s been a pillar for the team and a role model for the younger players.”
