President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States has targeted a coastal facility in Venezuela used to load ships allegedly involved in drug trafficking, though he provided few operational details, reports Euronews.
Trump appeared to confirm the strike during an improvised radio interview on Friday. When asked by journalists about “an explosion in Venezuela,” he stated: “There was a large explosion in the port area where they load the ships with drugs… We hit all the ships, and now we hit the area. That’s where they load them.”
He did not clarify whether the US military or the CIA carried out the attack or provide a specific location. Trump said: “I know exactly who it was, but I don’t want to say who it was. But you know it was along the coast.”
According to The New York Times, the strike was carried out by the CIA, marking an escalation in the Trump administration’s efforts to target suspected drug trafficking ships. Previous US operations focused on vessels in international waters in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific.
Additionally, the US military conducted another strike on Monday against a suspected drug ship in the Eastern Pacific, killing two people. Since September, these operations have reportedly killed at least 107 people in 30 strikes, according to Trump administration figures.
