Jelena Gjukanoviq, accused of espionage for the Serbian BIA, appeared today at the Basic Court in Prishtina, where the initial hearing in her case began.
Gjukanoviq did not plead guilty in court today, while her lawyer, Predrag Miljkoviq, requested that she be released from pre-trial detention and continue under house arrest.
When the court asked Gjukanoviq if she is currently employed, she stated that she is still part of the OSCE.
The prosecutor in the case, Bekim Kodraliu, opposed this request, arguing that due to the severity of the offense and the risk of flight, pre-trial detention remains necessary.
The presiding judge, Rrahman Beqiri, stated that a decision on this request will be made after the conclusion of the hearing.
Gjukanoviq is suspected of acting in cooperation to commit the criminal offense of “Espionage” under Article 124, paragraph 3, in connection with Article 31 of the Criminal Code.
Prosecutor Kodraliu stated that Gjukanoviq is accused of, from an unspecified date until her arrest on February 28 this year, as an OSCE official in Kosovo, knowingly and intentionally carrying out repeated actions that constitute active assistance to the intelligence activities of a foreign service, specifically the Intelligence and Security Agency of the Republic of Serbia (BIA).
About a week ago, the Kosovo Special Prosecution filed charges at the Basic Court in Prishtina against Jelena Gjukanoviq for the criminal offense of “Espionage.”
According to evidence collected during the investigation, the information obtained by J.GJ was transmitted to senior BIA officials, namely R.G., responsible for the Novi Pazar region in Serbia, and the official L.B., with whom the accused met on several occasions in Belgrade, Serbia.
