In an interview with Radio Free Europe, European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that Albania will become the 29th member state of the European Union by 2029, following Montenegro.
“It would be a failure for us if, within the current European Commission’s mandate, we do not succeed in admitting any new state into the EU. I am confident that we can admit Montenegro, a country with which we have opened all chapters and started closing them, a process that can be concluded by the end of 2026. From a technical point of view, we can finalize negotiations with Albania by the end of 2027. It will then be up to the member states to decide whether these two countries will join our European family,” said Marta Kos.
When asked about Montenegro and Albania, she confirmed that they will be the 28th and 29th EU member states before her term ends in 2029.
