Albanian political parties from Presheva, Bujanoc and Medvegja will run on a joint list in Serbia’s snap parliamentary elections scheduled for 25 October.
The agreement was announced by Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti following a meeting Tuesday evening in Prishtina with representatives of the Albanian political parties from the Presheva Valley.
Kurti said the parties had agreed to establish the “Albanian Coalition” despite their political differences, describing the agreement as an important step toward stronger political coordination and parliamentary representation.
He also argued that political unity alone is not enough, pointing to what he described as an asymmetry in minority rights between Serbia and Kosovo. Kurti noted that Serbs in Kosovo have 10 guaranteed seats out of 120 in the Kosovo Assembly and argued that, under a comparable approach, Albanians from Presheva, Bujanoc and Medvegja should have at least five guaranteed seats in Serbia’s parliament.
Kurti pledged that Kosovo’s institutions would continue supporting Albanians in the PreshevaValley on issues concerning their rights, identity and wellbeing, while previous meetings have focused on political coordination and strengthening their parliamentary representation.
