At least 10 people were killed and dozens injured after an oil tanker undergoing maintenance caught fire in the Riau Islands province, reports Jakarta Globe.
The incident occurred on the MT Federal II, which was being serviced at a shipyard in Batam, located approximately 20 kilometers from Singapore. Firefighters, rescue teams, and police rushed to the scene to evacuate victims and extinguish the flames.
Local police chief Asep Syafrudin confirmed that 10 workers died and 18 others were seriously injured as of Wednesday afternoon.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with authorities conducting a detailed examination of the site. The fire produced thick smoke over the industrial area of western Batam.
This marks the second deadly accident involving the Federal II tanker this year; a previous incident in late June claimed the lives of four workers.
