The European Union Delegation in Tirana has expressed concern over the violent escalation of student protests and clashes with Albania’s State Police.

The delegation said it was aware of allegations of excessive use of force by police against protesters and journalists.

Full statement:

“We express concern over the violent escalation of the protest in Tirana.

Freedom of assembly and freedom of expression are fundamental rights and core European values. They must be respected and exercised peacefully.

We are aware of allegations of excessive use of force by police against protesters and journalists.

We expect police actions to be proportionate and to respect fundamental rights, and we also expect these incidents to be investigated as a matter of priority.

We encourage all parties to de-escalate tensions.

Constructive dialogue among all those involved is the only way forward.”
