The European Union has approved its first countermeasures against tariffs imposed by the United States, after member states today backed a proposal to respond to Washington’s 25% tariffs on EU steel and aluminum exports.
“The EU considers the US tariffs unjustified and harmful, causing economic damage to both sides and to the global economy. The EU has clearly stated its preference for negotiated outcomes with the US that are balanced and mutually beneficial,” the European Commission said in a statement.
The Commission announced that it will begin collecting duties from April 15, stressing that “these countermeasures can be suspended at any time if the US agrees to a fair and balanced negotiated solution.”
The Commission did not immediately disclose which US-imported goods would be targeted with the new tariffs.
