The European Commission has responded to reports claiming that Russia is seeking to ease sanctions as part of a maritime ceasefire in Ukraine.

The Commission announced on Wednesday that one of the key conditions for lifting sanctions would be the “unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces” from Ukraine, according to The Guardian.

“The end of the unprovoked and unjust aggression against Ukraine, and the unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces from all Ukrainian territory, would be one of the key conditions for changing or removing sanctions,” said EU official Paula Pinho in response to Russia’s requests.

Pinho added, “Russia must now demonstrate genuine political will to end its unprovoked and illegal war, and actions, not words, will determine Russia’s future in this matter.”
