Former President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, visited the village of Sllovi today to pay tribute to the late Zejnepe Gashi, a woman whose life became a symbol of national pain and unshakable endurance.

Zejnepe Gashi, who passed away recently, endured unimaginable loss during the 1999 war when her husband, two sons, and two grandsons were killed. Her story is intertwined with the broader tragedy of the Sllovi Massacre, where dozens of innocent civilians were executed by forces during the spring of 1999.

A Debt to Memory and Justice

During her visit with the Gashi family, Osmani emphasized that the wounds of such families are the foundation of Kosovo’s collective memory.

“Zejnepe Gashi lived with the heaviest loss a mother and a wife can experience,” Osmani stated. “These wounds do not belong to just one family; they are part of our collective memory.”

Last month, Osmani posthumously awarded Gashi the Presidential Medal of Merit. The honor recognized her extraordinary sacrifice and her relentless contribution to documenting the crimes committed during the war, ensuring that the victims of Sllovi would not be forgotten by history.

Key Highlights of the Tribute:

  • Posthumous Honor: Recognition of Zejnepe Gashi’s role in documenting war crimes for the pursuit of justice.
  • The Sllovi Massacre: A reminder of the dozens of civilians killed in the village during the 1999 conflict.
  • A Call for Dignity: Osmani noted that the sacrifice of the Gashi family serves as a “sacred trust” (amanet) to build a state where life and dignity are always protected.

Osmani concluded her visit by honoring all those who fell for Kosovo’s freedom, asserting that visiting such families is not just about honoring the past, but about strengthening the responsibility of leadership for the country’s future.
