Gjakova marks the 26th anniversary of the “Çabrat Epic,” a pivotal 1999 battle where KLA fighters defended civilians against Serbian forces.

Today, the city of Gjakova solemnly commemorates the 26th anniversary of the “Çabrat Epic”, one of the most intense and symbolic battles fought by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during the 1999 war for the country’s freedom.

From May 7 to 9, 1999, the neighborhoods of Gjakova became a battleground, as KLA fighters clashed with Serbian police, military, and paramilitary forces in a determined effort to protect thousands of civilians trapped in the city.

Fallen Heroes and Civilian Losses

The battle claimed the lives of seven KLA fighters, who are now honored as martyrs of the nation. In addition, 41 civilians were killed, and during the nights of May 7 and 8, 43 residents were abducted and disappeared, many of whom remain unaccounted for to this day.

The Weight of Memory

This battle stands as a powerful symbol of resistance, sacrifice, and humanity, as its main mission was the defense of civilians against mass atrocities. For the people of Gjakova, it remains a living wound in their collective memory, but also a source of pride for the courage shown in the face of overwhelming force.

Commemorative Events

Throughout the city, memorial events and tributes are being held to honor those who gave their lives and to remember the victims of the conflict. Families of the missing, survivors, veterans, and local leaders are gathering at the Çabrat Memorial to pay their respects and keep the legacy of the fallen alive.
