Haxhiu Urges EU to Advance Kosovo Toward Candidate Country Status

The Acting President of the Republic of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, met today with Valentina Superti, the European Commission’s Director for the Western Balkans, who is currently conducting her first official visit to Kosovo.

According to an official statement from the Presidency, Haxhiu highly commended the European Union’s continuous support for Kosovo’s development. She emphasized that this assistance has been instrumental in strengthening democratic institutions, implementing key reforms, and consolidating the country’s pro-European trajectory.

Haxhiu stressed that Kosovo has maintained a steadfast course regarding European reforms. She noted that the country is fully aligned with the EU’s Foreign and Security Policy and is rigorously implementing its obligations under the Reform Agenda and the EU Growth Plan.

During the meeting, Haxhiu demanded that Kosovo’s progress receive a clear political response from the European Union, specifically through advancing toward candidate country status and opening official membership negotiations.

Regional Cooperation and Equal Treatment
The discussion also focused heavily on the importance of implementing agreements reached under the Berlin Process and fostering regional cooperation based on the principle of equality.

Haxhiu firmly stated that Kosovo must be treated equally with other countries in the region across all sectors, including:

Official representation in regional bodies

Infrastructural connectivity and development

Regional trade and digitalization

Access to common market initiatives
