Kosovo’s Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, met with the United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Defense, Lord Vernon Coaker, on the sidelines of an official visit to Turkey. The meeting focused on the strategic evolution of the bilateral military relationship and the strengthening of Kosovo’s security institutions.

Minister Maqedonci expressed profound gratitude for the UK’s historic role in Kosovo’s state-building process and its consistent support in professionalizing the Kosovo Security Force (KSF).

A Proven Operational Partnership

The ministers highlighted the unique level of trust between the two militaries, noting that Kosovo and the UK have already engaged in successful joint missions far beyond the Balkans.

  • Global Missions: The KSF has been deployed alongside British forces in the Falkland Islands and Belize, demonstrating high levels of interoperability.
  • Operation Interflex: Maqedonci emphasized Kosovo’s contribution to the UK-led program for training Ukrainian recruits, reinforcing Kosovo’s position as a contributor to international security.

Future Defense Priorities

The discussion outlined a roadmap for expanded cooperation in several key areas:

  • Capacity Building: Specialized training programs for KSF personnel to meet NATO standards.
  • Military Interoperability: Aligning tactical and operational procedures to facilitate future joint deployments.
  • Regional Stability: Leveraging the UK-Kosovo alliance as a pillar for peace and security in the Western Balkans.

Strategic Context

The meeting reaffirms the United Kingdom’s position as one of Kosovo’s primary security guarantors. As Kosovo seeks to transition the KSF into a modern, defensive force, the partnership with the UK provides critical access to world-class expertise and global operational experience.
