The Kosovo Assembly has approved in principle the draft law on the State Bureau for the Verification and Confiscation of Unjustified Assets.

The draft law received broad support, passing with 81 votes in favor from all 81 lawmakers present in the chamber.

Before the vote, Justice Minister Donika Gërvalla said Kosovo’s citizens were closely following the process and awaiting the legislation’s approval.

“Citizens of our Republic are watching us and waiting impatiently for the approval of this law,” Gërvalla said.

She also briefly explained how the proposed mechanism would operate, stressing that the final decision on confiscation would remain with the courts.

“The Bureau verifies, collects and presents the evidence. The person has the right to defend themselves and challenge that evidence, while only the court decides on confiscation,” she said.

Besnik Tahiri, head of the Alliance parliamentary group, called for the legislation not to become part of the electoral campaign or be used as a political instrument outside the framework of the rule of law.

He said the law should apply to any public official who has abused their position.

The approval in principle allows the draft legislation to proceed to the next stages of parliamentary consideration.
