The Free Trade Agreement between Kosovo and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries — Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein — officially enters into full force today, October 1, 2026.
To mark the implementation of the agreement, the first shipment destined for the EFTA market is scheduled to leave Kosovo today from the Dheu i Bardhë border crossing at 1:00 p.m.
The agreement establishes procedures for proving the origin of goods and completing customs declarations for products that qualify for preferential treatment.
Negotiations between Kosovo and the four EFTA member states began in June 2022 and were successfully concluded in September 2024. The agreement was formally signed on January 22, 2025.
The deal is aimed at liberalizing economic trade between Kosovo and EFTA countries and establishing stable, long-term rules governing commercial exchanges.
Key areas covered by the agreement include the removal of tariff barriers and the facilitation of trade in industrial and processed agricultural products. It also provides for simplified technical, sanitary and phytosanitary requirements intended to reduce obstacles at border crossings.
The agreement further includes provisions on environmental protection and rules aligned with World Trade Organization standards.
The entry into force is expected to provide Kosovo exporters with improved access to the markets of Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein while establishing a clearer framework for bilateral trade.
