Kosovo’s State Prosecutor’s Office has welcomed the indictment of 35 suspects over alleged war crimes committed against the Jashari family and other civilians in the Jashari neighborhood of Prekaz, Skenderaj, during the Kosovo War.
In a statement, the Office of the State Prosecutor praised the work of the Kosovo Special Prosecution, the Kosovo Police and other law-enforcement institutions involved throughout the criminal proceedings, from the investigation through the filing of the indictment.
The prosecution described the case as one of the most sensitive and serious crimes committed during the war in Kosovo.
“This is one of the most sensitive and serious cases that occurred during the last war in Kosovo, and bringing those who ordered and committed these crimes to justice has been and remains the mission of the State Prosecutor’s Office in uncovering the truth and delivering justice,” the statement said.
The indictment concerns 35 individuals accused of war crimes against the civilian population in the Jashari neighborhood in Prekaz.
The attack on the Jashari family compound took place on March 5–7, 1998, during a major operation by Serbian forces. According to previous investigations, 59 people were killed, including members of the Jashari family.
The Kosovo Special Prosecution had been investigating the case for years, with the investigation formally opened in 2019 to establish potential criminal responsibility for the killings.
The latest indictment represents a major step in the domestic prosecution of alleged crimes committed during the Kosovo War and could provide a long-awaited judicial examination of responsibility for the events in Prekaz.
The State Prosecutor’s Office said that the pursuit of accountability for those responsible remains central to its mandate, emphasizing the importance of establishing the facts and ensuring justice for the victims.
The development comes as Kosovo continues to prosecute war crimes cases through its domestic justice system. An OSCE assessment published in July 2026 examined 48 war-crimes cases involving 138 accused persons adjudicated by the Special Department of the Basic Court of Prishtinë between 2019 and 2025.
