At the German Bundestag, the Republic of Kosovo’s Chief Negotiator with the European Union, Jeton Zulfaj, held a meeting with Dr. Anton Hofreiter, Chair of the Committee on European Union Affairs and a member of Alliance 90/The Greens; Johannes Schraps, Deputy Chair of the committee and an SPD member of parliament; and Peter Beyer, a member of the committee and CDU/CSU member of parliament. Zulfaj was accompanied by Kosovo’s Ambassador to Germany, Faruk Ajeti.
Chief Negotiator Zulfaj thanked the German parliamentarians for Germany’s continued support for Kosovo, emphasizing the gratitude of the people of Kosovo for German solidarity and support during decisive moments in the country’s history — from liberation and post-war reconstruction to the path toward independence, state-building and economic development.
The meeting focused on advancing Kosovo’s European Union integration process. Zulfaj emphasized that, nearly four years after submitting its application for EU membership, Kosovo remains the only country in the region without candidate status.
He called for the Bundestag’s support in urging the Council of the European Union to request that the European Commission prepare its opinion on Kosovo’s membership application this autumn.
The Chief Negotiator stressed that Germany has been and remains one of Kosovo’s most important partners and that its voice carries particular weight in EU enlargement policy. In this regard, he called for proactive engagement by German parliamentarians, including through contacts with their counterparts in other EU member states and European political families, to help advance Kosovo’s application.
The meeting also addressed Kosovo’s democratic and economic progress, the implementation of reforms within the EU integration process, as well as Kosovo’s full commitment to European Union values and the Republic of Kosovo’s full alignment with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.
Chief Negotiator Zulfaj thanked the German parliamentarians for the opportunity to meet and for Germany’s continued support for Kosovo.
