Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva condemned the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral institutions today, stating that they have “ceased to function” and failed to protect victims of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Lula made the remarks to journalists after a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, ahead of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur, where he is expected to meet U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Who can accept the genocide that has been happening for so long in the Gaza Strip?” Lula asked following the bilateral meeting aimed at strengthening ties between Brazil and Malaysia.

“Multilateral institutions, which were created to try to prevent such atrocities, have stopped functioning. Today, the UN Security Council and the UN itself no longer work,” Lula emphasized.
