Norwegian authorities have released the cargo ship “Silver Dania”, which was detained over suspicions of damaging a Baltic Sea telecommunications cable. Investigators found no evidence linking the vessel to the incident, police confirmed.
Investigation Continues, But No Link Found
The ship, operated by Silver Sea Group, was seized at Latvia’s request with assistance from Norway’s Coast Guard. However, after examination, Norwegian authorities saw no reason to hold the vessel any longer.
The case remains under investigation, while Swedish and Latvian officials continue probing a suspected act of sabotage against the cable connecting their countries.
Baltic Security on High Alert
Meanwhile, Swedish authorities seized and searched the Malta-flagged cargo ship “Vezhen”, operated by a Bulgarian company. The firm admitted the vessel may have accidentally hit the cable with its anchor.
The Baltic region remains on high alert following multiple disruptions to electric cables, gas pipelines, and communication links since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In response, NATO has ramped up naval patrols, aerial surveillance, and drone operations.
