Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni remains steadfast in her support for the Italy-Albania migrant agreement, vowing to challenge the Rome Court of Appeal’s decision that halted the stay of 43 migrants recently transferred to Gjadër, Albania.

Appeal Court vs. Government

The Italian Court of Cassation previously ruled in December that Meloni’s government had the authority to define “safe countries” of origin for migrants. However, the Court of Appeal has decided to wait for a European Court of Justice ruling on February 25, questioning Italy’s classification of safe countries.

Meloni’s administration argues that this undermines Italy’s judicial system and will file an appeal, accusing the court of failing to uphold previous rulings.

Migrants Returning to Italy

The 43 migrants in Gjadër will be sent back to Italy this Saturday, marking the third such reversal since the agreement’s implementation. Previous cases occurred on October 18 and November 11, 2024.

The Italy-Albania migrant deal, paused for two months, has now been reactivated, signaling renewed political and legal battles over its enforcement.
