German Parliament Foreign Affairs Chair Michael Roth Condemns Terrorist Attack on Kosovo’s Ibër-Lepenc Water Canal
Berlin, November 30, 2024 – Michael Roth, the Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the German Parliament, has strongly condemned the recent attack on the Ibër-Lepenc water canal in Kosovo, calling it a “terrorist act.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Roth emphasized that the method used in the attack was consistent with Russian-style terrorism, a tactic he claims is being used against a sovereign country in the heart of Europe.
The attack on the canal, which provides critical water supply to two coal-fired power plants in Kosovo, has raised concerns about the country’s energy and water security. The explosion, which occurred near the town of Zubin Potok in northern Kosovo, resulted in significant damage to the canal, threatening both power generation and drinking water access in the region.
Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has accused “Serb-led criminal gangs” of orchestrating the attack. He stressed that the assault targeted vital infrastructure and could lead to severe disruptions in the country’s energy and water supplies.
Roth’s comments add to the growing international calls for a swift and thorough investigation into the attack. He further warned that if Serbia’s involvement is confirmed, it could have serious consequences for Serbia’s EU accession negotiations, a process already complicated by ongoing tensions between Kosovo and Serbia.
