Spanish constitutional law professor Joaquín Urías has criticized the Hague verdict in an opinion article, arguing that the international community has punished Hashim Thaçi more severely than Serbian figures accused of organizing the genocidal campaign in Kosovo.
Urías said the Hague ruling is difficult to defend, arguing that it appears to have been influenced by political considerations.
“The international community has punished Thaçi with a harsher sentence than any organizer of the Serbian attempt at genocide. It is difficult to defend this decision, which nevertheless appears to stem from political calculations about how Kosovar society should progress. It seems that, in the face of humanity’s greatest conflicts, law is destined to be merely a cover for politics. Or for ethics,” Urías wrote, as reported by Express.
According to Urías, the crimes committed by Serbian forces in Kosovo cannot be compared with the crimes that the Hague court alleged were committed by Thaçi and the other former KLA leaders.
“The war crimes attributed to Thaçi were committed in the context of a guerrilla response against ethnic cleansing,” the Spanish professor wrote, emphasizing what he considers the vital importance of the broader context of the conflict in Kosovo.
