The national anthem of Kosovo turns 16 years old today since its approval by the 120-member Assembly, which declared independence on February 17, 2008.
The proposal, labeled “Europe,” was approved on June 11, 2008, in a special session as the national anthem with 72 votes in favor, 15 against, and 5 abstentions.
When the melody by the composer Mendi Mengjiqi was proposed, the anthem also had written lyrics.
However, due to restrictions from the package of former President Martti Ahtisaari, the selection committee was forced to remove the lyrics.
