U.S. President Pushes for Quick End to War, Hints at High-Level Negotiations
U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin could meet as early as this month, as reports suggest advanced preparations for their first high-level contact in three years.
According to Russian politician Leonid Slutsky, the meeting is expected to take place in February or March, marking a potential shift in U.S.-Russia relations.
Trump has repeatedly called for a swift resolution to the war in Ukraine and has hinted at imposing harsh sanctions and import tariffs on Russia if Moscow fails to reach a settlement with Kyiv. However, he has also expressed sympathy for Russia’s position, particularly regarding Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, an issue that remains a core dispute between the two nations.
Nuclear Arms and Energy on the Agenda
Beyond Ukraine, the meeting could also cover nuclear arms control and energy prices. Trump has signaled a willingness to negotiate reductions in nuclear weapons, while Putin has been modernizing Russia’s nuclear arsenal following the suspension of the New START treaty.
Putin has previously refused to engage with Washington on extending the treaty, which expires in February 2026, but he appears open to discussing Ukraine and oil prices.
Potential Host Nations
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are reportedly being considered as neutral venues for the talks, reflecting Russia’s deepening ties with the Gulf nations.
If the meeting proceeds, it could mark a major geopolitical moment, influencing the future of the Ukraine conflict, U.S.-Russia relations, and global energy markets.
