U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Tokyo, receiving a ceremonial welcome and meeting Japanese Emperor Naruhito, marking the latest stop on his five-day Asia trip. The trip aims to culminate in a potential trade war truce with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During the visit, Trump secured a $550-billion investment pledge from Tokyo and is expected to meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at Akasaka Palace, where discussions will focus on trade, security, and shipbuilding investments. Takaichi has pledged to boost Japan’s defence spending and strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance.
The Asia tour follows preliminary talks between U.S. and Chinese negotiators on a framework to pause escalating tariffs and restrictions on critical minerals, fueling optimism in Asian markets. Trump is scheduled to meet Xi in South Korea on Thursday, after stops in Malaysia and South Korea, as the U.S. seeks a managed trade agreement with China ahead of his expected visit to Beijing next year.
