According to European leaders and Ukrainian officials, a 30-day ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine will come into effect on May 12, 2025. This agreement was reached following high-level discussions involving French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Reuters reported that the leaders also secured the backing of former U.S. President Donald Trump for the initiative. The leaders have warned Russian President Vladimir Putin of new massive sanctions if Russia fails to adhere to the ceasefire agreement.
The agreement came after a teleconference between the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine, during which they coordinated their positions with Trump, aiming to collectively push for a temporary halt in hostilities.
The ceasefire is seen as a diplomatic effort to reduce tensions and pave the way for a potential longer-term resolution to the ongoing conflict.
