U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that he will hold talks with Danish officials next week to address concerns over Greenland, amid heightened tensions between Washington and Copenhagen over American interest in the Arctic territory.

Rubio’s planned diplomatic engagement follows controversial statements from the White House indicating that acquiring Greenland—an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark—remains a strategic objective for the United States. While Trump has previously proposed purchasing the island, his administration has also publicly stated that military force remains an option to achieve that goal.

The issue has drawn strong opposition from Denmark and its European allies. Leaders including Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and other NATO members have rejected any suggestion of U.S. territorial acquisition, stressing that Greenland’s sovereignty and self‑determination must be upheld.

European nations have also underscored the need for collective security under NATO and the United Nations Charter, reaffirming that decisions about Greenland’s future should rest with the Danish and Greenlandic people, not external powers.

Rubio’s meeting with Danish counterparts is intended to defuse the diplomatic strain and avoid escalation, even as U.S. officials signal that diplomatic talks are preferred over any coercive action
