The United Kingdom has advised its citizens in Kosovo to exercise caution and avoid large crowds and demonstrations amid expectations of major public gatherings on September 16, when a verdict is due in the case against former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi and three other former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders.
In an updated travel advisory, the British government said large gatherings were expected during the week in Prishtina and other urban centers, including on September 16.
“During the coming week, including September 12 and 16, there will be large gatherings in Prishtina and other urban centers. This may cause disruption, including to traffic and public transport,” the advisory said.
British citizens in Kosovo were urged to monitor local developments, allow additional time for travel and stay away from large crowds and demonstrations.
The warning comes amid heightened attention surrounding the September 16 verdict at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, where a trial judgment is expected in the case against Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi.
The four former KLA leaders are facing charges related to alleged crimes committed during the 1998–1999 Kosovo war. All four have pleaded not guilty.
The UK advisory follows similar warnings issued by France and the United States, which have also urged their citizens in Kosovo to exercise caution around large gatherings and potential disruptions connected to the verdict.
The expected ruling has prompted increased security preparations in Kosovo, with authorities coordinating with international security and diplomatic partners ahead of the announcement.
