The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that North Korea has made “very serious” progress in expanding its nuclear weapons capabilities, including the possible addition of a new uranium enrichment facility.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said there has been increased activity at key nuclear sites, particularly the Yongbyon complex, which includes a 5-megawatt reactor, reprocessing units, and a light-water reactor.

According to Grossi, uranium enrichment could provide North Korea with a more efficient alternative route to producing weapons-grade material compared to plutonium reprocessing.

He noted a rapid rise in activity at Yongbyon, including reactor operations and activation of multiple facilities. He also confirmed signs of construction resembling uranium enrichment halls, suggesting a significant expansion of capacity.

Grossi further warned that North Korea’s nuclear program is now estimated to include “several dozen” nuclear warheads, based on observed operational indicators across its facilities.

He added that a new building under construction at Yongbyon shows similarities to enrichment facilities at Kangson, another major nuclear site near the capital Pyongyang.
