The United States joined Russia in voting against a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine on Monday, marking a surprising departure from its longstanding foreign policy. The vote, which was supported by Ukraine and European countries, put the U.S. at odds with its long-time European allies, aligning it with the aggressor, Russia, on the third anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This shift occurred while the Trump administration has been engaging in discussions with Moscow to end the conflict, and President Donald Trump has intensified his rhetoric against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The resolution, which passed with 93 votes in favor, expressed “concern that the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has continued for three years and continues to have devastating and long-lasting consequences not only for Ukraine but also for other regions and global stability.” The resolution called for de-escalation, an early ceasefire, and a peaceful resolution to the war against Ukraine.
