Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a strong message at the Munich Security Conference, emphasizing the urgency of Ukraine’s NATO membership.

The Ukrainian president called for a stronger stance from European nations to take control of their own security future.

Zelenskyy stated that if Ukraine does not secure NATO membership, conditions should be created for building an alternative structure similar to NATO within the country.

He also pointed out that the strongest NATO member at this moment seems to be Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We cannot accept a ceasefire without real security guarantees,” Zelenskyy said, reaffirming Ukraine’s determination to remain an active participant in decisions that affect its future.

He also emphasized that Ukraine would not accept “deals made behind its back” without its involvement in the discussions.

In his speech to European leaders, Zelenskyy called for greater independence for the continent in defense matters, requesting that weapons be fully produced in Europe.

“Europe must decide its future,” he said, signaling a move toward greater autonomy for Europe in security issues.

The Ukrainian president further stressed that the time has come to create a European army, warning that North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces are learning modern warfare tactics.

He continued to call for ongoing military aid from Western allies.

“Our army alone is not enough, we need your support,” Zelenskyy stated.

“Ukraine has clear intelligence showing that Russia plans to send troops to Belarus this summer,” added the Ukrainian president.

He urged European leaders to act immediately for their own security, asking, “If Russia launches an attack or another operation in Europe, are your armies ready to face it?”
